BOOK CLUBS In French and English
Essences citoyennes – The Living Ideas Book Club (In French)
Reading to understand better, discussing to act better. Essences citoyennes is a book club focused on environmental issues — a space for ongoing civic learning. It features powerful readings on contemporary challenges, enriching discussions with invited experts, and an accessible approach that supports community engagement.
This project is created and led by Coralie Beaumont, a PhD candidate at Université de Sherbrooke. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on biodiversity governance from an information and communication perspective. A former science journalist and communicator, Coralie is passionate about bridging science and public dialogue.
Meeting: January 2026, date to be determined.
Book copies: We plan to provide a few copies of the book as needed. If you would like to borrow one, you’ll be able to let us know in the sign-up form.
Goals: Deepen understanding, ask questions, foster dialogue, and build bridges between citizens, research, and public action.
Coming up:
Spring 2026: Ordures! Journal d’un vidangeur – a look into waste management and public services.
Summer 2026: Participants vote between three book choices.

Both clubs operate the same way: participants come prepared to share and discuss with the group one or several books they’ve read recently. All are welcome.
Are you an Anglophone looking to brush up your French, or a Francophone looking to practice your English? Both clubs welcome the participation of those looking to connect with literature and conversation in another language.
