APRIL 22

Xania Keane

THE NEW TENANT

I saw you.
I saw you as crisp and clear as the lunar landing…
On an old, fuzzy black and white tv set.
You were all alone, floating weightless in the blackest space, tethered by a thin cord.
You couldn’t feel the winter, you couldn’t see that streets were coated in glass.

I felt you.
Before New Year’s, while glitter fell from the sky.
I’ll be sure to rest and move softly,
Like a box carrying a porcelain vase,
With “fragile” printed on all sides.
For my new tenant.

All through the month of April, we’re sharing a poem a day, celebrating the vibrant voices of our local poets writing in English. This initiative is coordinated by Angela Leuck, publisher of Shoreline Press.

Join us as we explore the creativity and stories of our community, one poem at a time.
