APRIL 26

Carole Martignacco

HOW THE SUN

If you’ve ever seen how the sun
reaches down through a hole in the clouds

how in one sweeping gesture
it passes over the swaying heads
in the open field

counting each one
even the tiniest individual
grains and hairs of each shaft of wheat

how the whole field shines
and bows in response

clearly nothing lost
in the path of this light
all silently blessed, transfigured

how can you ever believe in love
that is merely human

Carole Martignacco

Carole Martignacco is the author of Teasing the Tides: Haiku (Yarrow, 2023), A Bowl of Orange Suns (Shoreline, 2021), as well as the award-winning children’s book The Everything Seed (Tricycle, 2006). An ordained minister, she served for sixteen years the UU Estrie community in North Hatley, where she participated in writers’ groups and helped promote local literary events. Retired now, she continues to celebrate her love for poetry and the arts in the Maritimes.

All through the month of April, we’re sharing a poem a day, celebrating the vibrant voices of our local poets writing in English. This initiative is coordinated by Angela Leuck, publisher of Shoreline Press.

Join us as we explore the creativity and stories of our community, one poem at a time.
